Made from porcelain, I create my work by applying various techniques of throwing, slab building and coiling. The surfaces consist of combinations of glazes and terra sigillatas (fine partical clay slips) and are fired to 2265 Degrees F in the electric kiln. (all surfaces are food and dishwasher safe). Over time I have developed a preference for satin to matt glazes. These surface textures are achieved with a 20 hour firing cycle which includes prolonged periods of slow cooling. My choices of color range from whites, to yellows and a 2 tone black combination. The designs of surface are created by using wax resist which allows juxtapositions of 'color fields' intersepted with lines which both separate and connect different glazes and sigillatas. This process also involves a second bisque firing to burn off the wax resist. With each piece I aim to intergrate the surface with the proportions and contour already given by the form. The use of contrast, either subtle or severe, may create tension or provide a softening of the geometry of the shapes.
